Rules of membership

Aims of the association

The main purpose of the ENT UK, which was founded in 1943 as the British Association of Otolaryngologists with a membership of 180, is to advance the interests of British ear, nose and throat specialists and head and neck surgeons and their patients in every way possible and to work for improvements in the accommodation provided in ORL departments and in the provision of supporting medical, nursing and other staff.

The elected members of the Council, drawn from all areas in the UK, make recommendations on all matters of policy affecting the specialty. These can be communicated directly to the Department of Health or The Royal College of Surgeons or any other body concerned.

The consultant adviser in otolaryngology to the Department of Health is a member of Council and becomes aware of matters which members bring to the notice of Council and hears the discussion on these points.

The association is ready, at any time, to advise members about problems that arise in their departments to provide factual and moral support whenever this is needed in negotiations with regional and area health authorities and boards of governors.

Categories of membership (Part 1 of application form)

The association has the following types of membership:

Applications shall be submitted to the Council, who will satisfy themselves that such applicants are eligible to become members in the category selected. Council shall then elect such applications to membership as appropriate, retrospectively to the date of application. Please note that the subscription of the first year must be paid in full at the time of application by cheque made payable to BAORL-HNS.

Applications for membership will be considered at every Council meeting, and any new members elected by Council on the day of the annual general meeting shall be entitled to vote at that meeting and all subsequent annual general meetings.

Candidates for honorary membership shall be nominated by Council and their names brought forward to the next annual general meeting for election.

Subscriptions

The annual subscription for each member shall be payable by cheque to the BAORL-HNS at the time of application of membership and subsequently on 1 October of each year by Direct Debit. Members will be given at least 60 days notice in the newsletters of any increase in subscription. The subscription to the association is tax deductable under Schedule E.

A member whose subscription is 12 months in arrears and who has been duly notified thereof, shall cease to be a member of the association. With the consent of the Council, he or she may be reinstated on payment of the arrears.
