Journal of Laryngology and Otology Travelling & Research Scholarships

The Journal also offers two Scholarships each year for travel and one for primary research. These are open awards and will normally be advertised in November and December of each year. The adjudicators for these awards will normally be the Editors in conjunction with co-opted directors of the Journal. Their numbers will be varied, depending on the number of applicants. Their names will be made known and separately published.

Travelling Scholarships

Candidates who wish to apply for monies to facilitate their travel must provide a full curriculum vitae with two references and details of any other sources of agreed financial support. In addition they are also asked to note that the following conditions must be satisfied:

  • A candidate should have passed the final qualifying examination in his/her country and must be in the later stages of training.
  • The candidate should normally be a personal subscriber to the Journal.
  • The itinerary for travel should be agreed and the appropriate leave of absence from their training programme should either have been granted or approved in principle.
  • The application must be accompanied by documentation from the host department confirming acceptance and the duration and nature of the training to be offered.
Within three months of completion of the period of travel successful applicants will be asked to provide a report for the trustees, which will be published in the Journal.

Research Scholarship

One scholarship a year will also be available for pump priming of research in Otolaryngology and its allied sciences. Any department that submits a successful application will not normally be eligible for a further award with a frequency greater than one year in three. The trustees reserve the right to interview applicants, who should normally be a personal subscriber to the Journal, prior to making an award. It is a condition of award that papers emanating from the research will normally be offered to the Journal of Laryngology and Otology for publication. At the termination of the agreed period of study successful applicants will also be asked to provide a summary of the outcome of their project for the trustees. At the time of application, candidates will be required to provide:

  • A curriculum vitae with a letter of support from their supervisor.
  • The outline of the project to be undertaken together with evidence of local Ethical Committee approval where appropriate.
  • Details of any other sources of financial assistance that have been agreed.
