Status: Final report

Funding international placements for trainee doctors

Giri Wijayasingam is an SAS doctor currently working at Nottingham University Hospital. After successfully applying for an ENT UK Foundation fellowship grant, they were able to spend two weeks observing at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in America in February 2023.

Thanks to the opportunity provided by the grant, Giri was able to see exceedingly rare and unusual surgeries and conditions of the airway. They were also able to observe more common conditions, and how they were managed by surgical teams in the US, compared to the UK. This included American ENT surgeons’ work ethics, their day to day work and how they train.

All the airway surgeons Giri watched in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital are leading surgeons in America and two of them are world leaders in the field, and Giri was able to benefit from their expertise by learning several techniques that they now use managing patients back in the UK.

“I consider visiting Cincinnati Children’s Hospital as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, thanks to the ENT UK Foundation funding grant.”
