Developing a new VR training simulation

Award:  ENT UK Foundation Educational Fellowship 2022

Title: Virtual Reality Simulation Experience of an Emergency Paediatric Tracheostomy Management

Project Lead: Haleema Siddique

Grant Amount: £1,500

Status: Interim report

Background

This virtual reality programme is based on the paediatric emergency national guidelines. The programme is targeted at medical students and ENT trainees. It was used in simulation for ENT SHOS in oxford as a training piece of equipment at induction and throughout the year as part of simulation teaching. It was also used as part of the Oxford ENT Trauma course, which is recognised by ENT UK as an alternative to ATLS for ENT Trainees. The programme is used as a station where trainees get to go through the simulation experience.

Impact of ENT UK Foundation funding

The virtual reality programme was created thanks to the support of the ENT UK Foundation award. The project was accepted for oral presentation at IFOS - ENT UK and the Narula prize received was acknowledged as part of my oral presentation.

Current Status

I have collected a small amount of data from feedback from trainees’ experiences of using the module, as well as their experience in general of VR as a training tool. The next step will be to write up my results for publication.
