What makes for a successful career in ENT surgery?

Award: ENT UK Foundation Grant 2021

Title: What makes for a successful career in ENT surgery?

Project Lead: Charlotte Simms

Grant Amount: £500

Status: Interim Report

Background

ENT is a speciality which has inconstant exposure during medical school and foundation training with some students only receiving a few lectures and no specific allocation of placement time. These videos aim to promote a career in ENT through interviewing consultants and trainees about their experiences and motivations as well as educate on what they feel are key predictors of success.

These free online videos will enable increased exposure of ENT specialists to those at the beginning of their medical career, facilitating the transfer of values and experience to a wider range of individuals with the aim of encouraging recruitment into the ENT specialism. As well as highlighting the range of subspecialities, they will show the different training options and demonstrate the diverse range of individuals who are part of the ENT community encouraging recruitment from a wider participation background through positive role modelling.

On top of the potential for recruitment these videos will also allow for increased networking in the current pandemic climate through visibility and personable online interviews. By allowing watchers to understand the values and experiences as well as location and subspeciality interests of the interviewees it enables the potential for future mentoring relationships leading to a commitment to a career in ENT.

The resultant qualitative study aims to analyse what values and experiences these interviewees feel lead to a successful career as an ENT surgeon. This study will be published and educate aspirational students and trainees on the qualities and career decisions they should focus on.

Impact of ENT UK Foundation funding

The ENT UK funding has enabled us to buy professional filming equipment and green screen to provide high quality career videos. It will finance the travel costs accrued to film the consultants and trainees.

Current Status

25 interviews have been performed and transcribed with some very interesting themes developing. It is clear that ENT trainees and consultants are passionate about their work.

We aim to recruit a further 75 consultants and trainees for the study with the official career videos will be filmed during next year’s BACO conference in Birmingham and edited for release early next Summer (2023).
