This section of the website contains the ENT Undergraduate Curriculum, which describes the skills and objectives that should be achieved as an ENT student. Here you will find useful learning activities and links to educational resources from ENT UK's e-learning platform e-lefENT and OCB Media. Please note that access to OCB Media links will be coming soon.
The aim of this curriculum is to outline the learning objectives in ENT that should be achieved during undergraduate training. Having achieved these objectives, the student (and subsequent doctor) will then be competent to recognise common ENT conditions and institute appropriate initial treatments/management. Doctors practising in General Practice, Acute Medicine, Accident and Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics and Care of the Elderly will find this knowledge especially helpful.
This curriculum is based on evidence provided by a Delphi study carried out to identify the key learning objectives required for undergraduate training. The stakeholder group included ENT consultants and specialist registrars, accident and emergency consultants and specialist registrars, general practitioners and paediatricians. It has been designed in light of recommendations set out by the General Medical Council in the document entitled Tomorrow’s Doctors. The Learning objectives are mapped to Tomorrows Doctors 2009 (TD2009) as seen below. In delivering the curriculum, the emphasis should be on the recognition of symptoms and signs and the formulation of an accurate differential diagnosis. It is important to focus on the primary care management of common ENT conditions and to understand when a patient should be referred to secondary care.
A basic understanding of the secondary care management of common ENT conditions is required but detailed knowledge is beyond the remit of this curriculum. It is not necessary to have a detailed knowledge of any but the most common ENT operations. Throughout this document, topics of particular importance are highlighted with an asterisk(*). If delivery of the ENT curriculum is limited by time allocated to ENT, items without stars may be excluded.
