(Last updated: 11 Jun 2025 13:19)
The National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP) provides ENT consultant surgeons with comprehensive, objective data about their clinical practice, enabling evidence-based reflection and quality improvement. Enhanced and refreshed dashboards launching from June 2025 reflect ongoing collaboration with the ENT community to advance clinical practice standards.
What is NCIP?
Developed by the profession, for the profession, NCIP provides consultant surgeons with a secure, confidential platform to review their clinical practice through robust, nationally benchmarked data, making quality improvement tangible and measurable. When used collaboratively by teams in quality improvement initiatives, NCIP provides clinical context and consultant-level insights that drive unit-level outcomes and enable teams to make informed decisions about potential improvements.
Currently, 34 ENT dashboards cover a range of general ENT, rhinology, otology and endocrine procedures, providing quality metrics including volume, length of stay, readmissions, day case rates, and complication patterns.
Supporting Quality Improvement and Clinical Governance
NCIP transforms how ENT teams approach quality improvement by providing objective data for:
M&M meetings and clinical audit: Drill down into individual patient episodes while maintaining appropriate governance, enabling focused discussions on specific cases and systematic patterns.
Appraisal and revalidation: Generate comprehensive summary reports that meet GMC requirements for objective outcome data, reducing administrative burden while enhancing professional development.
Clinical Impact awards: Access to longitudinal outcome data with clear benchmarking
Service improvement: Clinically-led exploration of variation in key metrics enables evidence-based service improvement and resource planning.
