What is glue ear?

WHAT IS GLUE EAR?

 

Glue ear is when sticky fluid builds up inside the ear.

The fluid builds up behind the eardrum.

 


 

It makes hearing difficult.


 

It is common in young children.

 
 

WHEN DOES GLUE EAR HAPPEN?

 

After an ear infection.


 

When bacteria from the nose reach the ear.


 

If air cannot flow properly through the ear.

 
 

CAN ADULTS GET GLUE EAR?

 

Yes, but it is rare.


 

Adults with glue ear in one ear should see a doctor.

 

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF GLUE EAR?

 

Not hearing well.


 

Speech delay.

 

 

Balance problems.


 

Ear Pain.


 

Changes in behaviour.

 

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD HEAR BETTER?

 

Say their name before talking to them.


 

Make sure they can see your face when you speak.

 

 

Talk slowly and clearly.


 

Tell their teacher about their hearing problem.


 

Let them sit at the front in class to hear better.

 

HOW DO YOU TREAT GLUE EAR?

 

WAIT - glue ear usually goes away on its own.


 

NASAL BALLOON - blowing up a special balloon through the nose can help.

 

 

HEARING AIDS - can help if hearing is affected.


 

SURGERY - sometimes grommet surgery is offered.
