Neck Lump Clinic

PART 1 OF 1

Click on each of the following questions to discover the answers.

WHY AM I HERE?

You found a lump in your neck.

You go to see your doctor.

They want an Ear Nose and Throat doctor to check it.
This is to find out what the lump is.

You may be at the hospital for up to 3 hours.

You can bring someone with you for support.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

An ENT doctor will ask you questions about your health.

They will check your neck, ears, nose, and throat.

They may look inside your nose with a small camera.

This is called a nasal endoscopy.

WILL I NEED OTHER TESTS?

You may have a jelly scan to look at the lump.

This is called an ultrasound.

The doctor might take a small piece from the lump with a needle.

This is called a biopsy.

It helps find out what the lump is.

Most people go home the same day.

COULD THERE BE PROBLEMS WITH THE BIOPSY?

Most people feel fine after the biopsy.

Your neck may hurt for a short time.

You might get a small bleed or swelling.

This is normal.

Sometimes there can be an infection.

This is rare.

Tell your doctor if you feel unwell or the lump gets bigger.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TEST?

You can eat and drink as normal.

Try to rest for the rest of the day.

Avoid heavy lifting or hard exercise.

Any bruising should go away in a few days.

WHEN WILL I GET THE RESULTS?

Some results are ready on the same day.

Others may take 1 or 2 weeks.

The clinic will contact you with the results.

You can ask questions at any time.

WHAT IF MORE TESTS ARE NEEDED?

You may need more scans.

You might need another biopsy.

Sometimes, a small operation is needed to remove the lump.

The doctor will explain everything and answer your questions.
