Elective Prize 2024

About the Prize

Undergraduate electives form an important part of medical education and is a great opportunity to develop your interest in a specialty such as ENT. It gives an avenue to pursue projects either locally or overseas. We felt we would reward such endeavours by establishing a prize award for the best elective.


Terms & Conditions

  • You must be a medical student registered either at a UK medical School or at International Medical School
  • You have completed an elective related to ENT Head and Neck surgery or any of its sub-specialties (see SFO UK website for more details)
  • You must be a member of SFO UK  
  • You should provide an up-to-date CV
  • You must prepare an elective report regarding the ENT component of your elective
  • Your elective report may be uploaded onto the SFO UK website along with your elective details if it is of high quality, even if it is not selected as the winner.

If you are the winner

  1. You may be asked to give a presentation of your elective at the Annual Undergraduates and Foundation Doctors ENT UK conference.
  2. You will be awarded your prize money after completion and evaluation of your elective report and/or presentation of your elective.
  3. SFOUK reserves the right to withhold the elective prize money should it be felt that the terms of this agreement have not been met.
  4. You should provide a confirmation letter from your medical school and the institution that you have visited, confirming,

         (i) that you are a student at said medical school and

         (ii) the details of your elective


Criteria

Your report should include:

  • No more than 1,500 words. Can include pictures (captions not included in word count).
  • Clinical aspects of elective (timetable or similar, theatre, clinics)
  • If applicable, details of any research work conducted. A separate 300-word abstract including Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion sections should be included
  • Details of any charity/philanthropic work conducted
  • Details of other experiences of note
  • Reflections on any of fields above in respect to:
  1. What have you learnt or gained from the experience?
  2. How will your elective contribute to your future career including aspects relevant to ENT surgery?
  3. What contributions have you made to your institution/others during your elective time?

Scoring

The report will be marked based on:

  • The contribution of your elective to your learning and growth
  • The contribution you have made to your institution and others during your elective time
  • Writing quality 
  • Report design

Additional details

The prize to be awarded is £500.

The winner will be announced in January 2025
