Mentoring

ENT UK Mentoring Scheme and CESR Buddy Scheme

ENT UK Mentoring Scheme - hosted and led by WENTS

“Mentoring is the transfer of knowledge and experience for mutual benefit”.

WENTs have identified an interest from trainees at all levels, and from Consultants,  irrespective of gender,  in participating in a mentoring scheme. Having the opportunity to discuss your aspirations and reflect upon and resolve your own problems with someone who is supportive and experienced is invaluable. It provides a “safe talking space” away from your usual place of work to be honest and open about your thoughts on your professional life. The initial WENTS schemes is being supported and expanded by ENT UK

Mentoring is usually conducted by a senior, experienced person. It is a supportive form of development, and focuses on long term goals and life ambitions. It is directed toward general knowledge and thinking, as opposed to specific tasks or jobs. It can help a person manage their careers and improve skills, increase confidence, improve personal and professional networks, and provides an opportunity to discuss personal issues productively.

Through a mentoring scheme we aim to partner volunteer mentors and mentees with each other. We are currently requesting people to complete our questionnaire to help gather volunteers and information to allow suitable partnering, based on level of training and guidance requested.

ENT UK Mentoring Scheme is currently paused.

We run our training course; please keep an eye on ENT UK communications and the website for the dates of this and other mentoring supporting events.

ENT UK CESR Buddy Scheme

Each year approximately 10 ENT Specialty doctors apply for Specialist registration via the CESR route in the UK. This is an expensive process and the support for these doctors in preparation for their submission is variable around the UK due to the variety of experience that may be available in each region.

The aim of ENT UK CESR ‘buddy’ mentorship scheme is to provide informal support and advice to a colleague in order to maximise their chance of success.  A CESR ‘buddy’ is a Consultant who may have applied via this route themselves or perhaps had experience of supporting a colleague through the CESR process.

If you would like further information on this mentorship scheme or in becoming a CESR ‘buddy’ or if you are a Specialty doctor who would like the support of a ‘buddy’ please contact:

Janet Stephen, Education & Governance Officer, email: janet@entuk.org
