Bullying, Harassment and Undermining (BHU)

2 February 2023

ENTUK is dedicated to supporting surgeons throughout their career.  In developing our new Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy ENT UK has also been considering the issue of Bullying, Harassment and Undermining (BHU). Our role and influence in such matters is quite limited, but as a professional body we are able to signpost trainees and non-trainees, including the consultant body, to the resources that are available to assist our members.

BHU issues should all be managed in confidence and are usually dealt with at a Trust level via Freedom to Speak up Champions, Human Resources and the Clinical or Medical Director.  Trainees may often raise concerns with a clinical or educational supervisor who should be aware of those more specifically trained in this area, such as a Post Graduate Tutor, or Director of Medical Education and Guardian of Safe Working.  Outside of the Trust the Training Programme Director or Post-Graduate Dean can also be helpful.

Respect is one of ENT UK’s values and the GMC is clear in its advice regarding the use of social media by doctors. Colleagues must not bully, harass or make gratuitous, unsubstantiated or unsustainable comments about individuals online and this is an essential part of good medical practice.

ENT UK is contributing to work on addressing BHU through a review led by the Federation of Surgical Specialty Associations (FSSA) and will keep members updated on this.
