Principles of Care for Adults with a Tracheostomy Living within a Community Setting

20 November 2025

We are pleased to highlight the new Principles-of-Care (PoC) documents, created as part of the NTSP initiative. These resources address the rising number and increasing clinical complexity of adults with a tracheostomy living within the community setting.

Developed to augment existing guidance, their primary aim is to support organisations in appropriately planning discharge from hospital and developing community care plans. This ensures that equivalent resources are available outside of the hospital setting. Please note these principles of care specifically focus on adults with a tracheostomy and do not include laryngectomy patients.

The project was led by Paul Twose and colleagues based in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
